Baby is cured of HIV after aggressive early treatment, doctors say

A Mississippi baby born with HIV has been declared cured after 2 1/2 years of treatment, giving hope to millions of people worldwide. This would be the second-ever documented case of a patient cured of the AIDS virus. (The first was a man in Berlin in 2007, who was treated with a bone-marrow transplant.) Although it's just one patient and we can't assume everything that worked for this baby will work for others, it's still bringing hope to doctors about the possibilities for treating children born with HIV. The child received an "aggressive antiretroviral treatment" within 31 hours of birth, a more intense and immediate dose than what the World Health Organization currently calls for. Doctors believe it might have stopped the virus from making "viral reservoirs" in this young patient. They say they see occasional "signals" of the virus in her system, but they can detect no viral activity, which they call a "functional cure."

A 1,320-pound blue marlin taken at Ascension Is. among biggest ever

UK angler Kevin Gardner landed his first blue marlin on Monday and it was a doozy.

Fishing off Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean, a destination known for its "granders," aka 1,000-pound marlin, Gardner boated one of the biggest blue marlin ever caught, an incredible 1,320-pounder.

It was said to be the second-largest blue marlin taken at Ascension Island, behind a 1,337-pounder landed in 2002. By comparison, the IGFA all-tackle world record for Atlantic blue marlin is 1,402 pounds caught off Brazil in February 1992. The all-tackle Pacific blue marlin is 1,376 pounds.

By any standards, the fish was huge.

Harmattan skipper Olaf Grimkowski reported on his Facebook page that the fish hit around 1:30 p.m. at the southwest side of the island.

Do not use the cruise control when there is ice on the road. If the cruise accelerates on ice, you may lose control of the car.
Let off the accelerator as you approach a bridge.
Just because you have four-wheel drive and studded snow tires does not mean you can still drive safely at 75 mph on ice.
Do not run parallel to semis during a snow storm or when driving on ice. Either pass them or stay well behind them.
Black ice is nearly invisible and will accumulate on bridge overpasses – especially those crossing water.
Carry some emergency items in your car – flares, blanket, candle, matches, tire chains and a small folding shovel like soldiers carry. They may save your life if you go off a rural country road during winter.
Getting your children off to school on a snowy day can be an adventure. First, sweep the snow off the car, start the car, turn on the defroster, and then go back in and get the youngsters dressed and ready for school.
Never throw hot water on a frosty windshield; it might crack the glass. Use a scraper or start your car early and let the defroster do the job.
If you take your car through an automatic wash on a freezing day, don’t try to use the power windows until all the water dries up – wind will evaporate the ice as you drive around.

Must Be Marlin Week!

A 987-pound blue marlin by four anglers who were at least in their 80s.
Capt. Manuel Dominguez said the youngest angler in his charter group, which embarked from the Mexican resort city of Cabo San Lucas Saturday morning on what it hoped would be a brief and relaxing tuna-fishing excursion, was 82.
The excursion lasted a grueling 16 hours.
While aboard the 32-foot cruiser, Ziggy, Arizona anglers Sergent and Sandy Snagirett, and John and Edie Rayno, had caught several tuna before deciding to reel in the lines and call it quits.
It was 1:20 p.m.
But then something very large struck the line attached to the right outrigger. At the end of the line was a lure resembling a flying fish.
An epic battle was at hand, whether the old-timers liked it or not. All took turns with the rod but neither could make headway. (Neither angler is pictured in this post. They were said to have slept in and missed the weigh-in the next morning.)
The crew members helped with the reeling duties but even they could not turn the head of the valiant billfish.
Capt. Dominguez initially thought the fish was a giant tuna, but after 40 minutes it jumped. "I thought it was around 800 pounds because I've caught two around that size before," he told Tracy Ehrenberg, general manager of Pisces Sportfishing, which was first to blog about the catch.
They were still fighting the fish as the sun began to set over the Pacific.

No More Mail on Saturdays

Postal Service to cut Saturday mail to trim costs
The U.S. Postal Service will stop delivering mail on Saturdays but continue to deliver packages six days a week under a plan aimed at saving about $2 billion annually, the financially struggling agency says.

In an announcement scheduled for later Wednesday, the service is expected to say the Saturday mail cutback would begin in August.
Under the new plan, mail would be delivered to homes and businesses only from Monday through Friday, but would still be delivered to post office boxes on Saturdays. Post offices now open on Saturdays would remain open on Saturdays.

Marlin Sinks Boat?

Some people say there's no such thing as a bad day of fishing.....

A fisherman off Panama was battling a huge black marlin when the battle took a turn for the worse.
Not all the details are in, but apparently the captain began backing down on the huge fish, a common practice in big-game fishing when a fish is taking line. He puts the boat in reverse to chase the fish.
One commenter on Marlin Magazine's Facebook post who apparently had some knowledge of the incident said that the captain fell as he was backing down on the fish at full throttle. The boat took on too much water and, finally, there was no correcting the situation.
Marlin Magazine reported that the boat went to the bottom of the sea and everybody on board was rescued by the photo boat. And, of course, the fish got away.

A new report by CarMD.com Corporation details exactly which maintenance mistakes can cause the most damage.
Here are the top 10:

1. Putting off recommended / scheduled maintenance

2. Ignoring the “check engine” light

5. Neglecting coolant, brake, transmission and other fluid services

The best example of the snowball effect of missed car repairs is the air filter. It costs about 20 bucks to replace, but if left alone, a dirty filter can bust oxygen (02) sensors in cars, which cost as much as $250 to replace. And when the sensor fails, you'll first see your gas mileage plunge, then possibly wind up with a $1,000 bill to replace your catalytic converter.

No. 3 deserves special attention, as well. Technicians say ignoring oil changes is the "single most damaging car maintenance item that their customers neglect that they wish they could change," according to CarMD.

The trouble with dirty oil is that it doesn't jive well with the high-tech engines in today's modern vehicles, according to Art Jacobsen, CarMD vice president, and can lead to engine failure if left ignored for too long.

The old go-to rule for oil changes was to refresh every 3,000 miles. But most experts agree drivers should go by the schedule their car's manufacturer dictates instead.

Hypersonic 'SpaceLiner' Aims to Fly Passengers in 2050

A hypersonic "SpaceLiner" would whisk up to 50 passengers from Europe to Australia in 90 minutes. The futuristic vehicle would do so by riding a rocket into Earth's upper atmosphere, reaching 24 times the speed of sound before gliding in for a landing.
SpaceLiner passengers would have eight minutes to experience the rocket launch before they reached an altitude of about 47 to 50 miles (75 to 80 kilometers). That falls short of the 62-mile (100-km) boundary considered the edge of space, but even a suborbital flight would allow SpaceLiner to glide back to Earth at hypersonic speeds of more than 15,000 mph (25,200 kph).
The rocket-powered design stands out compared with other proposed hypersonic jets, which feature new air-breathing engine concepts. European aerospace giant EADS previously unveiled a hypersonic jet concept that would rely mainly upon air-breathing ramjets to reach cruising speeds of Mach 4 — faster than the supersonic Concorde's Mach 2 performances but far slower than the SpaceLiner's Mach 24 goal.

SpaceLiner's European project planners say their reliance upon proven rocket technology could allow their vehicle to fly sooner rather than later. They plan to use liquid oxygen and hydrogen rocket propellants so that the rocket engines leave only water vapor and hydrogen in the atmosphere.
