Soldier thought to be unconscious salutes upon getting Purple Heart
There wasn't a dry eye in the hospital room during last week's Purple
Heart ceremony for Army Ranger Josh Hargis. Hooked to a breathing tube
in a military hospital in Afghanistan, Hargis had lost both his legs in
battle, and doctors thought he hadn't yet regained consciousness when
the ceremony began at his bedside. However, Hargis lifted his bandaged
hand, with a little help from an attending doctor, in order to salute a
commanding officer who had presented him with the medal. "I cannot
impart on you the level of emotion that poured through the intensive
care unit that day," the commander wrote in a letter to Hargis' wife,
according to Fox News. "Grown men began to weep, and we were speechless
at a gesture that speaks volumes about Josh's courage and character."
